About Our Firm

A few words about us

Akers & Akers, L.L.P.
Akers & Akers is knowledgeable and committed to providing cities with accurate reliable answers and counsel while keeping an eye towards the City's budget. We don not make these claims indiscriminately. It might be possible to find other firms with lower rates but cities will not find any that combines such rates with long-term municipal expertise and awareness of the vital need for immediate responses that come directly from the principals of the firm.

Despite being located in Austin, Akers & Akers provides cities as much benefit from our services, in the most economical method, as a local law firm.  Akers & Akers' clients are located throughout the state, from Marfa to the Metroplex, and Akers & Akers is able to provide full legal services, including municipal court prosecution and litigation, because our attorneys take advantage of the technological and legal developments that make it practical to represent all of our cities, while being willing to travel as much as is necessary.

The technological tools include Skype, e-mail, telecommunications, faxing, teleconferencing, video conferencing, and the internet.  Because Texas law allows us  to attend meetings by telephone, video, webcam, and even electronic mail, Schertz may obtain our services and our virtual presence at Council or other meetings without having to pay for either travel or mileage unless personal attendance is specifically desired.  Akers & Akers will help the City acquire and establish any electronic hardware or software if necessary or desired.

Our background, experience, library of ordinances, agreements, and city-related materials allow us to furnish answers and documents quickly, and our work has a proven track record.  The four attorneys in the firm offer their clients a total of more than 50 years of experience as lawyers in virtually every area of municipal practice, from annexation to zoning; construction to condemnation, employment to environmental, land use to litigation.

Our firm also conducts seminars and trainings for our clients, either privately or in conjunction with TML events.  Our attorneys have spoken at numerous municipal and governmental seminars and written extensively on topics important to cities and other forms of political subdivisions.

Our Team

Personnel to be assigned

It is our experience that a public sector client should have a single attorney in the law firm who it can turn to as its principal legal representative.  This approach provides for continuity, dedication, accountability and serves to avoid duplication of efforts and minimize legal costs.  That attorney may choose to draw upon the expertise of other members of the firm in their specialized fields or for backup assistance.

Special expertise

The firm has developed and maintains a special expertise in the representation of local government units and hires lawyers with significant experience in the area.  Our lawyers have served as in-house City Attorneys, Assistant City Attorneys or in municipal law departments.  We actively participate in professional organizations such as International Municipal Lawyers Association (IMLA), Texas City Attorney’s Association (TCAA), Government Lawyers and Environmental Law Sections of the State Bar of Texas.  Several have also worked for the State at various agencies and have a solid understanding of the inter-working of state and local governments. Finally, our lawyers have been integral in the crafting of local government law by having worked at TML or have been called upon frequently to testify on topics before the Texas Legislature.

Municipal and local government law

ALF is a law firm that has chosen its lawyers for their particular expertise in areas that support or are in critical need to municipal and local government law. It represents and provides services to dozens of general law and home rule cities, boards and commissions, and utility providers throughout the state of Texas, regardless of location.
